Microsoft Office 2007 documents cannot be read natively with earlier versions of Microsoft Office. Microsoft offers a free compatibility tool that allows users with a previous version of Microsoft Office to read and to some degree interact with documents created in the Microsoft Office 2007 format. Files that are created by Microsoft Office 2007 generally have a .***x extension to their filename (i.e.: .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx). The pre-defined list of allowable file extensions within RMS applications now includes these new file formats.
The following is the explanation as provided by Microsoft:
Users of the Microsoft Office XP and 2003 programs Word, Excel or PowerPoint—please install all High-Priority updates from Microsoft Update before downloading the Compatibility Pack.
By installing the Compatibility Pack in addition to Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able to open, edit, and save files using the file formats new to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007. The Compatibility Pack can also be used in conjunction with the Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to view files saved in these new formats. Use of the Microsoft Compatibility Pack addresses the following situation as reported to Peoplefluent Service Support: When a candidate uploads a .docx file through the Candidate Portal, the Recruiting Portal user who has Microsoft Office 2003 or earlier installed cannot access the document.
